Since 1868, the McIlhenny family has been making TABASCO® Pepper Sauce. During a TABASCO® Factory Tour on Avery Island, you’ll be introduced to Edmund McIlhenny and five generations of his family that continue to combine heirloom tabasco peppers, distilled vinegar, and salt into a hot sauce that graces tables in 200 different countries. Avery Island itself is a special place. It’s a salt dome that provides not only fertile pepper-growing soil and salt, but also a subtropical habitat for plants and wildlife. Part of the land was set aside in 1895 and is now the 170-acre Jungle Gardens you can explore during your visit. The majestic oaks, exotic flowers, and bird and wildlife habitat of Jungle Gardens speak to the family’s commitment to care for the land where they have lived and worked for generations.
