Things To Do in Louisiana's Cajun Coast

Trails

Explore the natural beauty of the Cajun Coast.  Explore the Atchafalaya Basin on a swamp tour or a self-guided water tour, hike on a refuge, drive the Atchafalaya Water Trails, paddle our numerous waterways or add 300 species of birds to your life list.

BAYOU TECHE NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE BOARDWALK
Stroll the boardwalk through the Bayou Teche National Wildlife Refuge and enjoy the beauty of cypress-tupelo swamps, the sight of alligators and numerous bird and fauna species—including the Louisiana black bear—which occur on the refuge, but are shy and seldom seen. For more information contact the Bayou Teche NWR office at (337) 828-0061.

ATCHAFALAYA NATIONAL HERITAGE AREA
A Native American word, “Atchafalaya” (ah-CHA-fa-LIE-ah) means long river. Established in 2006, the Atchafalaya National Heritage Area stretches across 14 parishes in south-central Louisiana. Both a place and a concept, the heritage area is culturally rich and ecologically varied, a home to Cajun culture, as well as a diverse population of European, African, Caribbean and Native-American descent. It also features beautiful scenery and abundant wildlife. Enjoy swamp tours, music, food, driving adventures and more throughout the Heritage Area. For more information call (985) 380-8224.

PADDLING TRAILS
Explore our exotic waterways by canoe or kayak. In addition to rich history and unique culture, the Cajun Coast offers the natural beauty of the Atchafalaya Basin Swamp, the largest overflow swamp in the U.S. Moss-draped cypress trees, majestic oaks, numerous acres of bottomland hardwoods, over 170,000 acres of designated wildlife management areas and an abundance of bird and animal life provide easily accessible outdoor adventures along our secluded waterways. Identified trails include the Bayou Teche Paddling Trail, Bayou Teche/Lower Atchafalaya Paddling Trail, Bayou Teche National Wildlife Refuge Paddling Trails, Franklin Paddling Trails, Grand Avoille Cove Paddling Trail, and the Cypremort Point/Burns Point Paddling Trails. If you love canoeing or kayaking, stop by one of our visitors centers to pick up our paddling trails brochure.

ST. MARY LOOP BIRDING TRAIL
Follow America’s Wetlands Birding Trail throughout St. Mary Parish, the Cajun Coast, for the opportunity to view over 300 species of birds. View eagles every February during Eagle Expo & More. For information visit America’s Wetland’s Birding Trail or call (985) 380-8224, or (800) 256-2931.

Birding & Wildlife Watching

Enjoy one of the fastest growing outdoor activities, birdwatching, with an abundance of opportunities throughout the Cajun Coast to spot over 300 known species of birds by car or boat.

You can travel down Stephensville Road off Hwy. 70, visit the Brownell Memorial Park and Carillon Tower (a
designated bird sanctuary), travel along Cotten Road in Patterson or take a swamp tour into the Atchafalaya Basin for a close-up view of the natural environment. Eagles can be sighted from October through the end of April.

The Atchafalaya Basin, one of the great ecological wonders of the United States, abounds with all types of wildlife. It extends north from Morgan City past Lafayette in a maze of bayous, lakes, ponds and cypress swamps.
